The Benefits of Gratitude

We are experiencing un-chartered and challenging times. The COVID-19 pandemic understandably has led to fear, stress and fatigue. Focusing on gratitude — recognizing and appreciating what is valuable and meaningful to you — is one option within our control that might help in facing some burdens of the Pandemic.

While it’s perfectly natural and OK to acknowledge how difficult life has been for the last several months, you want to avoid too much “negative thinking”. Practicing gratitude is one way to become aware of and shift your focus to some positive aspects of life. Studies have shown that having gratitude can improve your stress level and outlook. Take a moment to write down some of things you’re grateful for, no matter how big or small. If you are so inclined, let others know that you are grateful for them or the impact that they have had on you. Reaching out to express gratitude can be a “win-win” for all parties involved. By implementing a regular routine, your practice of gratitude will become second nature and the benefits more noticeable.

This article from Psychology Today provides a brief overview of the practice of gratitude.
