Supporting Staff During Difficult Times (Critical Incidents and Adverse Events)

The EAP has been specifically trained to help employees who have experienced a tragic event such as, but not limited to, sudden death or suicide of a coworker, an adverse medical event, and assault, violence or serious injury to an employee.  When a workgroup has been impacted by such an event, the EAP consultant would consult with the manager to identify, and plan an appropriate response to meet the needs of the manager and workgroup.

An EAP consultant may meet with staff individually, or with the workgroup, when first experiencing such an event.  Sometimes a meeting with staff may be best a few days after the event.  The goal of this voluntary service is to assist employees who feel they can benefit from discussing a critical incident and to provide strategies for self-care and mutual support.  Although it is found that most individuals heal from their experience of a traumatic event, EAP has found that employees express benefit from participating in EAP services after such events and feel supported by the organization.  Group meetings typically last one hour and is best if scheduled in a private setting.                     .
