Helping Employees: The Manager/Supervisor Role in Working with the EAP

The EAP is a confidential work&life resource to assist supervisors and employees with personal problems that may affect job performance. The EAP helps the supervisor to stay in the role of a supervisor by focusing on the employee's job performance, not on personal problems. The manager is most valuable to the organization as a motivator of employees.

Studies indicate that approximately 10% of the workforce, at any point in time, is experiencing personal problems significant enough to affect their work.

Personal problems such as alcoholism, marital and family difficulties, domestic violence, financial problems, mental health issues, legal concerns and job stress cost American business and industry billions of dollars annually. Management must respond to increased absenteeism, tardiness, employee turnover, medical claims, grievances, wasted supervisory time, lowered employee morale and reduced productivity with both effective solutions and humanitarian concern.

The EAP provides consultation to supervisors to resolve workgroup problems, including recognizing and referring troubled employees, managing differences and restoring productivity.

Consultations can assist managers with:

  • A change in job performance, such as absenteeism, errors or unusual behavior that could indicate a personal problem.
  • Workplace safety concerns, such as questions about substance abuse or domestic violence, or threat of violence.
  • Personal problems, such as grief, emotional distress, child or elder concerns, and life changes.
  • Critical Incident Stress Management.
  • Workgroup education, such as Cumulative Grief, Managing Change, Stress Management and Effective Communication.
