How the EAP Works

Professional assessment, counseling and consultation services form the backbone of the employee assistance system.  EAP’s experienced counselors will assist the employee or the employee’s family member in defining the problem, exploring possible resolutions, and in developing a realistic plan of action.

It goes without saying that at one time or another, every employee could benefit from professional, confidential consultation regarding personal problems or needs.  To encourage employees to take positive steps toward resolving personal problems, the employer provides the EAP at no cost to the employee.

The EAP is designed to be preventive.  The goal is to help employees before job performance significantly declines.  The EAP should never be used in a threatening or punitive manner.

Most employees who use the EAP are self-referred.  They may have heard about the EAP at orientation, attending a work&life seminar or from a coworker.  However, as a manager, it is vital to be aware of the confidential services offered by the EAP should an employee need assistance, and should be able to offer EAP as a resource.  We recommend that the manager or supervisor contact the EAP when suggesting an employee use EAP services. (see Making an Effective Referral to EAP )

Employee orientations, seminars, posters, brochures, and articles are utilized in letting employees know that the EAP is readily available.  Managers should contact EAP if we can provide their work group with any of these.

The supervisor’s role is critical in assisting the EAP in reaching employees.  The manager’s involvement and support for the EAP will facilitate the employees’ timely assistance with personal problems and will allow the manager to continue to do what he or she does best - manage people around workplace issues.
