ChildCare and Summer Activities for Families in 2020

Under normal circumstances, balancing work and childcare can be a challenge. During these times, there are added stresses with accessing and finding affordable childcare.  The Mass General Brigham Employee Assistance Program is available to help you and your family identify options for childcare. Below are some resources (including current updates on MGB offerings) that you might find useful. For further assistance, contact the EAP at 866-724-4327.

Child Care

In-Home Back-up Care  

  • In-home providers are available for benefits-eligible employees at all MGB affiliates from Bright Horizons. If you have previously used, this option is still available to you although Bright Horizons is our preferred vendor partner.

  • The cost is $3 per hour (for up to 3 children from the same family) for employees whose annual salary is less than $75,000 per year. All others will pay $8 per hour (up to 3 children from the same family). MGB will pay the remaining costs. Please note that Bright Horizons will automatically administer the correct rate. If you use, you will be charged $8 per hour and MGB will reimburse you $5 per hour if your annual earnings are less than $75,000. Reimbursement may take up to 4 weeks.

  • In-home care will be available for 40 uses between July 14 and December 31. We will continue to monitor the need and adjust accordingly. Any days used prior to July 14 will not count against this limit.

  • You can register for and reserve Bright Horizons backup care by: 
    • Visiting: (Use Google Chrome)
    • Downloading the backup care app in the App Store or Google Play
    • During first-time user registration, you will be prompted to verify your employer information. Use the username Partners and the password Benefits4You.

  • To access, sign up online using one of the customized links set up for MGB or call "Care@Work by"
    at 855-781-1303 (note: If your hospital/organization is not listed, please use the PHS link).

Center-based care options
In-center summer programming in the Mass General Brigham Child Care Centers offered to benefits eligible employees from July 14 to August 28.

The Mass General Brigham Child Care Centers are running as Exempt Emergency Child Care programs through July 10. At the state’s direction, the centers will transition to summer programming between July 14 and August 28. All MGB Child Care Centers will be closed on Monday, July 13 for cleaning, meetings, training and to make state-required environmental adjustments.

Summer Programming at Traditional Child Care Centers 
Registration: Priority will be given to families who were enrolled at traditional child care center pre-COVID. Site directors will contact these families directly to discuss enrollment options.

A limited number of slots will be available in our traditional care centers between July 14 and August 28. Once pre-COVID families have been enrolled, all remaining slots will be open to benefits-eligible employees who are working on site. Reservations can be made for the month of July, for the month of August, or for July and August on a space available basis.

Cost: For employees whose annual salary is less than $75,000 per year, the cost is $24/day for 1 child, $45/day for 2 or more children, all others will pay $48/day for 1 child or $90/day for 2 or more children. Mass General Brigham will pay the

remaining costs. There will be no charge for families currently eligible for a State child care voucher.

Summer Programming at the MGH and BWH Backup Child Care Center
Summer programming will also be available at the MGH Backup Center and the BWH Backup Center between July 14 and August 28.

Registration for backup child care summer programming will begin on Tuesday, July 7 at noon. Reservations can be made by phone only.  Registration will be for a minimum of 6 hours per day.  To reserve a slot, call the centers directly at the numbers listed below:

Bright Horizons Additional Family Supports offers free premium access to Sittercity, an online site that connects you with nannies, babysitters, elder care resources and other services.To access the tools and resources available through Bright Horizons Additional Family Supports, visit (we recommend using Google Chrome) and click on “Additional Family Supports” then click “Use It” for the service you need most. The “Find Sitters, Nannies & Housekeepers” link will bring you to Mass General Brigham's Sittercity homepage, where you can create a username and password to gain access and begin to search.

Caregiver Background checks 
If you are arranging for child care through a personal connection and wish to have a caregiver go through a background check, follow these steps:

  • Ask your caregiver to set up a profile at They can fill the profile in completely or just fill in the basics (e.g., no profile picture).
  • Once they have set up a profile, ask them to notify you. At this point, you should access your Sittercity account provided through Bright Horizons Additional Family Supports and find your caregiver's profile. Use the direct link from their profile to request a background check. Background checks are free. Enhanced checks cost between $30 and $80. Background checks usually take 2 to 3 days to process, but can take up to 10 business days.
  • Your caregiver can remove their profile from Sittercity after this process is complete.
